Music Theory Nottingham

I have been playing musical instruments since I was about 6 or 7 years of age, and whilst instruments have come and gone in my life, music theory is a fundamental subject needed to be proficient at any instrument. I now not only enjoy still playing many instruments, but I also enjoy offering lessons for Music Theory. Nottingham is one of the areas I cover.

Few people realise that learning to play an instrument also includes learning another language – learning to read music. This is sometimes quite intimidating to some people and I have had quite a few students here at Zoe Life Music, who initially don’t want to learn to read music because of that!

Have you just started to learn an instrument? Or have you now reached a point in your music career where you have to sit a Theory exam in order to continue taking the practical music exams? With the ABRSM system, once you have achieved your Pass, merit or distinction at grade 5, they require that you take a theory exam before going on to take Grade 6 exams to ensure you have good musicianship knowledge to back up and assist you in your instrument playing.

It may be that as a child you had music lessons, but then learning to read music just didn’t make any sense. However, the opportunities that learning about music theory can open up to you as a musician and your musical ability are great.

Imagine, listening to a piece of music, and be able to spot chord progressions and patterns within the music that will enable you to play that piece more easily yourself? And knowing how music works – which can be like a jigsaw puzzle, means that you can also create your very own compositions!

Here at Zoe Life Music whatever your thoughts, fears or goals regarding learning music theory, I make certain that the lessons are fun, suited to your requirements, and to your style of learning. There are theory workshops run occasionally throughout the year, which are fun times to meet other people in the same boat as you, as well as running individual 1 to 1 music theory lessons.
